"How much will it cost?" is usually the first question we get, and fair enough. Moving is expensive and quotes you see online range wildly. The honest answer is that there isn't a meaningful industry average, because every move is genuinely different. What this post does instead is explain the factors that push your quote up or down, so the numbers you receive actually make sense.
For a real price for your specific move, the quickest path is a free, no-obligation quote. WhatsApp us or call 07873 405 938 with a bit of detail about your move and we'll turn a price around quickly, with no sales pressure afterwards.
The six factors that drive your removal price
1. Volume (the biggest one)
How much stuff you have, usually measured in cubic metres. A house with normal lived-in contents is very different from the same house where someone has been in residence for decades and the loft is full. Volume determines van size and number of trips, which determines price more than any other single factor.
How to reduce it: declutter ruthlessly before your survey. Every cubic metre you can cut is money saved.
2. Distance
Local moves (under 20 miles) are dominated by volume. Longer moves add fuel, vehicle time, and a second day if the drive plus loading won't fit in one. Nationwide moves are priced on a combination of distance, time, and often a return leg for the van.
3. Access at both ends
- Ground-floor flat, short walk to the van? Cheapest.
- First or second floor with easy stairs? Normal.
- Fourth floor with no lift? Pricier, because labour time doubles.
- Narrow rural lane or restricted parking zone? Pricier, because we may need a smaller van and more trips.
- Listed building with tight doorways? Pricier, because of the extra care required.
How to reduce it: arrange parking dispensations with the council if needed, clear the route the day before, book a ground-floor-to-ground-floor move if you have a choice of which dates.
4. Time of year and day of the week
Peak removal season in the UK is May to August, plus the last Friday of every month (because that's when most completions happen). Prices are noticeably higher during these windows and availability is tight.
How to reduce it: if you have flexibility, aim for a midweek move in the quieter winter months. You'll get better teams with more time for your job, and a sharper price.
5. Extras you choose to include
- Full packing service adds to the baseline price but saves you a serious number of hours of labour. See our packing service for what's included.
- Furniture dismantling and reassembly is usually included as standard on full house moves, but confirm in writing.
- Storage between homes, if your completion dates don't match. See self-storage for pricing.
- Clearances, for the things you don't want to take. Our house clearance service handles the disposal, donation, and recycling ethically.
6. Insurance level
- Goods-in-transit cover up to a headline figure (ours is £10,000 per removal van) is included as standard with any reputable mover.
- Upgraded cover for high-value items (art, instruments, heirlooms) is sometimes available on request. Some movers outsource this to specialist insurers.
- Public liability (£1 million with us) is always included and protects you if something goes wrong at either property during the move.
Red flags in low-ball quotes
If a quote comes in dramatically below the others, check these four things before you book:
- Are they insured? Ask for a copy of the certificate. Real, named, current.
- Is the price fixed or will it change on the day? Hourly rates without a cap are a known trap.
- Who's actually doing the work? Some "removal companies" are brokers who subcontract to whoever's available. You won't know the team until the day.
- Reviews. Google reviews with photos of vans and named staff are real. Vague five-star reviews posted in a cluster three years ago often aren't.
What a quote should include in writing
- Date, start time, and expected duration
- Full pickup and delivery addresses
- Vehicle size and number of crew
- Inventory (what's being moved)
- Insurance cover included
- Payment schedule
- Cancellation policy
If a mover can't give you this on paper, they can't give it to you on the day either.
The honest answer to "can you match this cheaper quote?"
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If a quote is cheaper because they're willing to take the job on a slow day or they're closer to one of your addresses, that's real. If a quote is cheaper because they're cutting corners on insurance, crew, or time, matching it would mean we do the same, and that's not a trade we're willing to make.
For a free, no-obligation quote with no hidden extras, WhatsApp us or call 07873 405 938. Most quotes are back to you within a few hours. For Huddersfield-area moves we'll come round in person for a free survey. For moves further afield we ask for a 5-minute WhatsApp video walkthrough of each room — accurate enough for a fixed price 95% of the time.
